Initial Consultation
The first session typically involves an introductory conversation where the coach and client establish rapport and clarify expectations. The coach will ask about your current situation, challenges, goals, and what you hope to achieve through coaching. This session helps determine if the coaching relationship is a good fit and allows the coach to understand your communication style and needs. You may complete an assessment or reflection exercise to help identify key areas for focus.
Treatment
During regular coaching sessions (typically 30-60 minutes, conducted in-person, by phone, or video), the coach uses various techniques to support your progress. These may include active listening, powerful questioning to help you gain clarity, brainstorming solutions, accountability structures, and strategy development. The coach helps you identify limiting beliefs, create SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), and break larger objectives into manageable steps. Between sessions, you'll likely have homework or action items to complete, which form the basis of discussion in your next meeting.
After Treatment
Following each session, you should have clear action steps and insights to implement in your daily life. Many coaches provide notes or summaries of what was discussed and agreed upon. The real work of coaching happens between sessions as you apply the strategies and insights to your actual life circumstances. Progress is measured through concrete changes in behavior, achievement of milestones, or shifts in perspective and satisfaction.
Follow-up Sessions
Coaching typically involves regular sessions over a period of weeks or months, often on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. The coach reviews your progress on previous action items, celebrates wins, troubleshoots obstacles, and adjusts strategies as needed. As you progress toward your goals, sessions may become less frequent or coaching may conclude once objectives are achieved. Some clients return for "refresher" coaching or tackle new goals after completing their initial coaching engagement.
