Initial Consultation
The first session typically involves discovery and relationship-building. The coach and client discuss the client's current situation, desired outcomes, values, and motivations. The coach may use assessment tools, questionnaires, or reflective questions to understand the client's perspective and goals. This session establishes the coaching relationship and identifies areas for focus.
Treatment
Regular coaching sessions (typically 30-60 minutes, conducted in person, by phone, or online) follow a structured yet flexible format. The coach helps the client clarify goals, identify obstacles, explore options, and develop action plans. Techniques may include powerful questioning, active listening, visualization, accountability frameworks, and skill-building exercises. Between sessions, clients typically complete homework assignments such as journaling, reflection exercises, or specific actions aligned with their goals. The coach acts as a neutral observer and facilitator, helping clients access their own wisdom and problem-solving abilities rather than providing direct advice.
After Treatment
Following each session, the client leaves with specific action steps, insights, and homework to support progress toward their goals. Many clients report feeling motivated and clarity about next steps. The coach may provide written summaries or notes to reinforce key points discussed. Clients are encouraged to track their progress and note challenges or successes to discuss in the next session.
Follow-up Sessions
Coaching is typically conducted over multiple sessions (ranging from 6 to 12 months or longer, depending on goals). Subsequent sessions review progress, celebrate wins, troubleshoot obstacles, and refine strategies. The coach helps the client deepen self-awareness, develop new skills or perspectives, and move toward their vision. As goals are achieved, the focus may shift to new areas or deeper levels of the original goal. The coaching relationship continues until the client feels equipped and confident to maintain progress independently.
