Initial Consultation
The first session typically begins with an exploratory conversation where the coach learns about your background, current situation, and aspirations. You'll discuss what prompted you to seek coaching, what you hope to achieve, and any obstacles you're facing. The coach will explain their approach, establish confidentiality boundaries, clarify expectations about frequency and duration of coaching, and assess whether coaching is the right fit for your needs. This session helps both coach and client determine if there's a good working relationship and alignment on goals.
Treatment
During regular coaching sessions (usually 30-60 minutes, conducted in person, by phone, or via video), the coach uses various techniques to support your growth. These may include active listening, powerful questioning to promote self-discovery, goal-setting frameworks, action planning, and accountability structures. The coach helps you identify limiting beliefs, explore new perspectives, develop strategies for overcoming obstacles, and build concrete action steps. Sessions are highly personalized; your coach may use techniques from positive psychology, cognitive-behavioral approaches, motivational interviewing, or other evidence-informed methods depending on your needs and their training. Homework or "between-session work" is common, allowing you to practice new skills and track progress.
After Treatment
After each session, you'll typically have clarity on your goals and specific actions to take before the next meeting. Many people experience increased motivation and momentum as they apply coaching insights to their lives. It's normal to feel inspired initially and then encounter resistance or challenges when trying to implement change—this is expected and part of the growth process. Your coach will help you navigate these experiences in subsequent sessions.
Follow-up Sessions
Coaching is typically an ongoing relationship, with clients meeting regularly (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) over weeks or months. Progress is reviewed at each session, with the coach helping you celebrate wins, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust strategies as needed. As you make progress toward initial goals, new goals often emerge. Coaching may conclude when you've achieved your primary objectives and feel equipped to continue independently, though some people maintain ongoing coaching for sustained support and continued growth.
