Initial Consultation
Your first session typically involves a discovery conversation where your coach learns about you, your current situation, and what brought you to seek purpose coaching. The coach will ask open-ended questions about your values, past achievements that felt meaningful, challenges you're facing, and your vision for a fulfilling life. Expect to discuss your career, relationships, health, and any areas where you feel misaligned or unfulfilled. This session establishes rapport, clarifies your coaching goals, and helps the coach understand your unique circumstances and aspirations. Many coaches use assessment tools or ask you to reflect on specific questions before the first session.
Treatment
During active coaching sessions (typically 45-60 minutes), your coach will guide you through structured conversations and exercises designed to clarify your purpose and values. Common approaches include values clarification exercises, where you identify what truly matters to you; life purpose exploration, where you examine patterns in your most meaningful moments; and goal-setting work, where you translate your purpose into concrete, actionable objectives. Your coach may use questioning techniques, reflective listening, and accountability frameworks. You'll likely be given "homework" or between-session activities, such as journaling prompts, interviews with people you admire, or reflection exercises. Sessions are typically conducted via phone, video call, or in person, depending on your preference and the coach's availability.
After Treatment
Following each session, you'll have time to integrate insights and work on the assignments discussed. Many clients experience a period of reflection and clarity that continues between sessions. Some report shifts in perspective that influence their decisions and priorities in the days following a session. It's common to feel some initial discomfort or confusion as you challenge long-held assumptions about what you "should" do versus what you authentically want. Your coach may provide written summaries of key points and action steps to reinforce your learning.
Follow-up Sessions
Coaching is typically structured as an ongoing engagement rather than a one-time event. Standard coaching relationships range from 6 to 12 sessions over several months, though some clients continue longer-term coaching relationships. In subsequent sessions, your coach will review progress on goals, explore obstacles, deepen your purpose clarity, and adjust strategies as needed. As you gain clarity, sessions may shift from discovery work to implementation and accountability. The frequency of sessions (often bi-weekly or monthly) is flexible and tailored to your needs and preferences.
