Initial Consultation
The first session typically involves a comprehensive assessment of the client's current self-esteem level, identifying specific areas of concern, and exploring the underlying beliefs and experiences that have shaped their self-perception. The coach gathers information about the client's goals, values, and previous attempts to build confidence. This foundational conversation establishes rapport, clarifies expectations, and allows the coach to tailor their approach to the individual's needs and communication style.
Treatment
Ongoing coaching sessions generally last 50-60 minutes and focus on several core activities: identifying negative self-talk and limiting beliefs, examining their origins and validity, practicing self-compassion and positive self-talk, setting achievable goals, and developing concrete strategies for behavior change. Coaches may use techniques such as reframing, visualization, strength identification, values clarification, and accountability structures. Sessions are collaborative, with the coach asking reflective questions, offering perspective, and providing tools the client can use between appointments. The pace and depth progress based on the client's readiness and engagement.
After Treatment
Following each session, clients are typically given homework assignments, journaling prompts, or practice exercises to reinforce learning and build new thought patterns and behaviors. These between-session activities are crucial for integrating insights and creating lasting change. Clients may be encouraged to track progress, notice patterns in their self-talk, or complete specific challenges designed to build confidence in real-world situations.
Follow-up Sessions
Coaching relationships typically span 6-12 sessions or longer, depending on goals and progress. Follow-up sessions review progress, address obstacles, celebrate wins, and introduce new strategies as needed. Some clients work with a coach for an extended period, while others complete a focused program and transition to independent practice. Regular check-ins help maintain momentum and adjust the approach based on what's working.
