Initial Consultation
Before beginning, you may have a brief conversation with the facilitator about any injuries, health conditions, or areas where you prefer extra support or modifications. Importantly, you will be invited to discuss how you prefer to be addressed—some people appreciate gentle verbal cues, while others prefer visual demonstration or silence. This is about establishing your preferences and building trust. There is no expectation to share trauma history; the focus is on your present-moment comfort and choice.
Treatment
A typical session begins with arriving early, settling into a comfortable space, and perhaps some grounding—such as feeling your feet on the ground or becoming aware of your breath. The facilitator will likely offer a theme or intention, but you are always invited to modify, skip, or adapt any practice. Poses or movements are presented as options ("You might try..." rather than "You must..."), and you are encouraged to honour what feels right in your body. The pace is often slower than traditional yoga, with ample pauses for internal awareness. There are no hands-on adjustments unless you have specifically consented. Throughout, the facilitator may use language that emphasises choice: "If it feels right for you," "You decide," "Notice what happens without judgment." Sessions typically last 45–90 minutes and may include gentle movement, breath awareness, grounding techniques, and restorative poses.
After Treatment
As the session closes, there is usually time to transition gently—perhaps lying down, sitting quietly, or moving slowly. The facilitator may invite reflection or offer closing gratitude. You are encouraged to take time before returning to your normal pace. Some people feel deeply relaxed; others feel energised or emotionally activated—both are normal. There is no expectation to discuss your experience unless you wish to.
Follow-up Sessions
Many people attend trauma-informed yoga regularly—weekly or monthly—as part of an ongoing practice for nervous system regulation and embodiment. Consistency can help build safety and familiarity, though each session stands alone. Your facilitator may gently check in about what is working and invite you to adjust any aspect of the practice. Over time, many participants report increased body awareness, reduced hypervigilance, and greater sense of choice in daily life.
