Initial Consultation
Your first session typically begins with a comprehensive discussion of your goals, concerns, and relevant personal history. The practitioner will ask detailed questions to understand your situation, what you've already tried, and what success would look like for you. This is also when you'll discuss any medical or psychological conditions, medications, and whether you have previous experience with hypnotherapy. The practitioner will explain what Ericksonian hypnotherapy involves, how it differs from stage hypnosis or other approaches, and address any concerns or misconceptions you may have. You'll also establish expectations about the number of sessions, confidentiality, and how progress will be evaluated.
Treatment
During the actual therapeutic session, you'll be guided into a relaxed, focused state of attention—not sleep, but a naturally occurring state similar to daydreaming or being absorbed in a good book. The practitioner uses indirect language patterns, metaphors, stories, and embedded suggestions tailored to your specific situation rather than direct commands. You remain aware and in control throughout; hypnotherapy is a collaborative process where your own mind does the work of creating change. Sessions typically last 45 to 90 minutes. The practitioner may use techniques such as reframing (presenting situations in new ways), therapeutic metaphors (meaningful stories that parallel your situation), utilization (working with your own strengths and resources), or paradoxical intervention (suggesting unexpected approaches). You might be given post-hypnotic suggestions—ideas to continue working with after the session ends—or homework assignments to reinforce the therapeutic work.
After Treatment
After the session, you'll gradually return to full alert awareness. Most people feel calm, refreshed, or thoughtfully quiet. Some experience immediate shifts in perspective; others notice changes more gradually over days or weeks. The practitioner will discuss what you experienced, answer questions, and provide guidance on supporting the changes initiated in the session. You may receive recordings of the session or tailored audio files to listen to at home, which can deepen and reinforce the therapeutic work. It's common to feel a sense of hope or possibility after sessions, though temporary emotional processing or fatigue can also occur.
