Initial Consultation
Your reflexology session typically begins with a brief consultation where the practitioner asks about your health history, current concerns, lifestyle, and reasons for seeking treatment. This conversation helps the practitioner tailor the session to your individual needs. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and may be given a foot soak or cleansing to prepare the feet. The practitioner will also assess the condition of your feet and skin.
Treatment
You will sit comfortably in a reclining chair or lie on a massage table with your feet elevated. The practitioner applies varying pressure using their thumbs, fingers, and hands to specific reflex points across your feet, following meridian maps that correspond to different body systems and organs. The pressure may feel firm but should never be painful; communicate any discomfort immediately. The session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes and involves systematic work across the entire foot, often including the soles, tops, sides, and ankle areas. Many people find the experience deeply relaxing, and some report a sense of energy movement or tingling sensations.
After Treatment
Following the session, you may feel deeply relaxed or energized. Some practitioners recommend resting for a short time before resuming normal activities. Drink plenty of water to support your body's natural processes. You may experience mild temporary effects such as increased urination, improved sleep, or emotional release as your body responds to the treatment. These responses are generally considered normal detoxification responses, though scientific evidence for this concept is limited.
Follow-up Sessions
Many practitioners recommend a series of sessions to achieve optimal results, typically ranging from 4 to 8 visits spaced weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your goals and response. Some people maintain reflexology as an ongoing wellness practice with monthly or quarterly sessions, while others use it as needed during stressful periods or when experiencing specific concerns.
