Context
Emotional volatility describes a pattern of unpredictable, rapid, and intense emotional shifts that others experience as difficult to anticipate and that the individual experiences as difficult to regulate. It involves both the amplitude (intensity) and variability (unpredictability) of emotional responses — a person who can be affectionate and engaged one moment and sharply irritable or withdrawn the next, with the shift seemingly disproportionate to circumstances. Emotional volatility is characteristic of borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder (particularly mixed and cyclothymic presentations), ADHD (in adults, emotional impulsivity is a recognised core feature), PMS and PMDD, complex trauma, and severe sleep disruption. The relational consequences include partner and family members walking on eggshells, conflict cycles, and difficulty maintaining consistent relationships.
