Low metabolism (hypometabolism) describes a state in which the body's basal metabolic rate is reduced — energy is burned more slowly, thermogenesis is lower, and the body requires fewer calories than expected for its size and composition. Hypothyroidism is the most important cause, where reduced thyroid hormone output slows virtually every metabolic process — producing weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, and cognitive slowing. Prolonged severe caloric restriction (crash dieting) induces adaptive thermogenesis — the body reduces metabolic rate as a survival response to perceived starvation. Ageing progressively reduces metabolic rate through muscle loss and hormonal changes. Severe caloric restriction also reduces thyroid conversion (T4 to T3), amplifying the metabolic slowdown.
