Sleep apnoea describes a sleep disorder characterised by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep — occurring when the upper airway collapses (obstructive sleep apnoea, OSA) or when the brain fails to send breathing signals to the respiratory muscles (central sleep apnoea, CSA). OSA is by far the more common form, producing characteristic snoring, choking or gasping sounds, and partial or full awakenings throughout the night as breathing is repeatedly obstructed and restored. The consequences of untreated sleep apnoea are significant: severe daytime sleepiness, non-restorative sleep, increased risk of cardiovascular disease (hypertension, atrial fibrillation, stroke), metabolic syndrome, and cognitive impairment. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy has very strong evidence as the gold-standard treatment, maintaining airway patency throughout the night.
