Before You Arrive
Book your session when you can remain unhurried afterwards. Many practitioners suggest avoiding alcohol and heavy meals for several hours beforehand, as these may affect your sensitivity to the work.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing in natural fibres if possible. You'll likely remain fully clothed throughout, though you may be asked to remove shoes and metal jewellery that could interfere with energy flow. Some practitioners work with clients removing watches and mobile phones.
Bring water and perhaps a light snack for afterwards, as some people feel temporarily lightheaded following energy work. Arrive with an open mind but realistic expectations — your experience may be subtle rather than dramatic.
The Session Unfolds
Your practitioner begins with a consultation, discussing your current concerns and what drew you to chakra work. They might ask about physical symptoms, emotional patterns, or areas where you feel "stuck" in life. This conversation typically lasts 10-15 minutes.
You'll then lie on a treatment couch or mat, usually face up. The practitioner may begin by "scanning" your energy field with their hands held several inches above your body, checking for areas of heat, coolness, or resistance. Some practitioners use pendulums or other tools during this assessment.
The balancing work itself varies considerably between practitioners. You might experience gentle hands-on healing, with the practitioner placing their palms over each chakra location. Alternatively, they may work entirely within your energy field without physical contact. Many incorporate crystals — placing specific stones on or around your body — whilst others use singing bowls, tuning forks, or chanting to create sound frequencies.
The process typically moves from the root chakra at the base of your spine upwards to the crown chakra at the top of your head. Each chakra receives attention for several minutes, with the practitioner working to clear perceived blockages and restore balance. The entire energy work portion usually lasts 45-60 minutes.
What You Might Experience
Responses vary dramatically between individuals and sessions. Many people report deep relaxation, similar to a meditative state. You might feel warmth, tingling, or gentle pulsing in areas where the practitioner is working. Some experience vivid colours behind closed eyelids or see imagery that feels meaningful.
Emotional responses aren't uncommon. Some people feel waves of peace or joy, whilst others might experience temporary sadness or release as old patterns shift. These reactions are considered normal within the practice framework — your practitioner should explain this beforehand.
Physical sensations might include feeling lighter, more grounded, or temporarily energised. Conversely, some people feel drowsy or emotionally tender immediately afterwards. A few report mild headaches or unusual dreams for a day or two following their first session.
Not everyone feels dramatic shifts. Some experience subtle changes in sleep quality, emotional resilience, or general wellbeing that become apparent over several days rather than immediately.
Aftercare and Integration
Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours, as many energy healing traditions suggest this supports the integration process. Avoid alcohol for at least a day, as it may interfere with the subtle energetic shifts.
Schedule gentle activities for the remainder of your session day. Some people feel energised and want to tackle projects, whilst others need quiet reflection time. Both responses are normal — honour what your body requests.
Keep a brief journal of any shifts in sleep, mood, or physical sensations over the following week. These notes help both you and your practitioner track patterns and adjust future sessions accordingly.
Some practitioners recommend specific practices between sessions — perhaps meditation focused on particular chakras, wearing certain crystals, or using particular essential oils. Follow these suggestions only if they resonate with you.
Building Your Practice
Most practitioners suggest an initial course of three to six sessions, spaced 1-2 weeks apart. This allows time for integration whilst maintaining momentum in the energetic work. After this foundation, some people continue with monthly maintenance sessions, whilst others return as needed.
Your practitioner should assess your response after the second or third session. If you're not experiencing any beneficial shifts — even subtle ones — they might adjust their approach or suggest the modality isn't the right fit for you currently.
Some people combine chakra balancing with other practices like yoga, meditation, or counselling. Discuss this integration with your practitioner, as different modalities can complement each other effectively when properly coordinated.
Remember that chakra balancing exists within a specific spiritual framework. Your experience is valid whether or not you subscribe to traditional chakra concepts — many people find value in the deep relaxation and focused attention aspects alone.
