Preparing for Your Session
Arrive wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs. Natural fibres like cotton work particularly well. You'll remain fully clothed throughout the session, so choose layers you can easily adjust if you become warm or cool.
Eat lightly beforehand — avoid heavy meals within two hours of your appointment. Stay hydrated but limit fluids immediately before to minimise disruptions. Remove watches, jewellery, and mobile phones, as these may interfere with the practitioner's sensitivity during Byosen scanning.
Many practitioners suggest arriving with an open mind whilst setting aside specific expectations about what should happen. Unlike Western Reiki sessions that might discuss intentions or goals, Jikiden Reiki focuses on what the body reveals through energetic assessment rather than predetermined outcomes.
The Treatment Unfolds
Your practitioner begins with a brief consultation about your health and any current concerns. They'll explain the Byosen scanning process — a distinctly Japanese technique where they use hand sensitivity to detect areas of energetic disturbance in your body.
You'll lie comfortably on a treatment couch whilst remaining fully dressed. The session opens with the practitioner placing their hands gently on or slightly above your body, typically starting at your head and shoulders. Rather than following a predetermined sequence, they use Byosen scanning to identify where healing energy is most needed.
During scanning, the practitioner feels for sensations in their hands — tingling, pulsing, heat, or magnetic pulls that indicate energetic imbalances. When they detect Byosen, they'll rest their hands in that location for several minutes, allowing the energy to flow. You might notice their hands becoming quite warm during this process.
The practitioner works methodically across your body, spending varying amounts of time in different areas based on what they detect. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, with most time devoted to areas where Byosen is strongest. The room remains quiet except for gentle background sounds or silence, creating a meditative atmosphere.
Sensations During and After Treatment
Physical sensations vary considerably between individuals and sessions. Many people describe warmth or tingling where the practitioner's hands rest, though some feel coolness or gentle pressure. A floating sensation or feeling of deep relaxation is common, with some drifting into light sleep.
Emotional responses can surface unexpectedly. You might experience waves of peace, sudden sadness, or memories arising without apparent cause. This is considered normal within the Jikiden tradition, viewed as energetic releases that support healing.
Immediately after treatment, expect to feel deeply relaxed, possibly slightly drowsy or emotionally sensitive. Some people report heightened awareness of their body or surroundings. Others notice little initially but find benefits emerging over the following days.
In the hours following your session, you might experience what practitioners call a 'healing response' — temporary intensification of symptoms, emotional releases, or vivid dreams. These typically resolve within 24-48 hours and are considered positive signs that energy is moving.
Caring for Yourself Afterwards
Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours following treatment to support whatever processes the session has initiated. Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine, as your system may be more sensitive than usual.
Rest when possible. Your body has received an energetic treatment, and integration continues after the session ends. Gentle activities like walking in nature or quiet reflection can support this process, whilst intense exercise or stressful situations are best avoided for the remainder of the day.
Pay attention to changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, or emotional states over the following week. Keep a simple journal noting any shifts, as benefits often unfold gradually rather than dramatically. Some people notice improvements immediately, whilst others find changes accumulating over several sessions.
Planning Your Treatment Course
Jikiden Reiki practitioners typically recommend a series of sessions rather than one-off treatments. Traditional Japanese protocols suggest 3-5 sessions within a 10-day period for acute concerns, or weekly sessions over 6-8 weeks for ongoing wellness support.
Your practitioner will assess your response after the initial session and adjust recommendations accordingly. Some people find weekly sessions beneficial, whilst others prefer fortnightly or monthly treatments for maintenance and stress management.
Unlike Western therapeutic modalities, Jikiden Reiki doesn't follow predetermined treatment plans. Each session responds to what your body reveals through Byosen scanning, making the process highly individualised. Progress is measured through your own reports of wellbeing, sleep quality, stress levels, and general life satisfaction rather than specific symptom tracking.
