Initial Consultation
Your first breastfeeding support session typically begins with a comprehensive assessment of your nursing experience, concerns, and goals. The lactation consultant will review your pregnancy and birth history, your baby's feeding patterns, weight gain, and any challenges you've encountered. They'll observe a complete feeding session, examining your positioning, the baby's latch technique, and milk transfer. This observation helps identify specific areas needing attention while providing immediate feedback and adjustments.
Treatment
During the active support phase, your consultant will demonstrate proper positioning techniques and help you practice different breastfeeding holds to find what works best for you and your baby. They may address latch issues by showing you how to help your baby achieve a deeper, more effective latch. If you're experiencing pain, they'll identify the cause and provide solutions, which might include position adjustments or addressing tongue-tie concerns. For milk supply issues, they'll create a personalized plan that may include feeding frequency recommendations, pumping strategies, or lifestyle modifications.
After Treatment
Following your session, you'll receive a written care plan summarizing the recommendations discussed and any specific techniques practiced. Your consultant will provide resources such as educational materials, local support group information, or referrals to other healthcare providers if needed. They'll schedule follow-up contact to monitor your progress and address any new concerns that arise. You'll also receive guidance on warning signs to watch for and when to seek immediate help.
Follow-up Sessions
Subsequent appointments focus on monitoring progress and addressing evolving challenges as your baby grows. These sessions may involve weight checks, reassessing feeding patterns, and adjusting techniques as needed. Your consultant will continue to provide emotional support and encouragement while helping you navigate changes like growth spurts, returning to work, or introducing solid foods. The frequency of follow-up sessions is tailored to your individual needs and comfort level.
