Initial Consultation
Your first session typically begins with an in-depth discussion of your history, current concerns, and therapeutic goals. The practitioner will assess your readiness for this integrated approach, explain how EMDR and hypnosis work together, and establish safety protocols. You'll discuss any past experiences with hypnosis or trauma work, current coping strategies, and what success looks like for you. This session helps build trust and allows the practitioner to tailor the approach to your specific needs.
Treatment
During a treatment session, you'll first be guided into a relaxed hypnotic state through guided imagery, progressive relaxation, or other induction techniques. Once in this receptive state, the practitioner may introduce a specific traumatic memory or distressing situation while simultaneously using bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements, though tapping or auditory cues may be used). This combination is believed to help your brain process the traumatic material while the hypnotic state enhances focus and reduces resistance. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes and may feel quite different from traditional talk therapy—you remain aware throughout and maintain control at all times.
After Treatment
Following a session, you may feel deeply relaxed, emotionally processed, or sometimes temporarily more aware of feelings that were previously suppressed. It's common to experience shifts in perspective or emotional release. The practitioner will help you return to full alertness gradually and discuss any insights or sensations that arose. You'll typically receive guidance on self-care, grounding techniques, and what to expect in the coming days, as processing can continue after the session.
Follow-up Sessions
Many clients benefit from a series of sessions spaced weekly or bi-weekly, though the number varies widely based on the trauma's severity and your individual response. Between sessions, you may notice continued processing, dreams, or emotional releases as your nervous system integrates the work. The practitioner will track your progress, adjust techniques as needed, and work toward resolution of the targeted memories or issues. Some people experience significant shifts within a few sessions, while others require more extended support.
