Initial Consultation
Your first session typically begins with a thorough conversation about your health history, current concerns, and what brings you to Somatic Experiencing. The practitioner will explain how the modality works and answer your questions. This builds trust and helps the practitioner understand your unique needs. You'll discuss any physical sensations, emotional patterns, or stress responses you've noticed, and agree on gentle goals for your work together.
Treatment
During the session, the practitioner guides you to notice present-moment bodily sensations without judgment—such as tension, warmth, tingling, or areas of numbness. You remain fully clothed and in control throughout. The practitioner may suggest slow movements, gentle breathing awareness, or shifts in posture to help your nervous system complete stress responses. Sessions are highly individualized and move at your pace; you're invited to pause, rest, or share observations whenever needed. The focus is on building awareness rather than forcing change, allowing your body's innate capacity for self-regulation to emerge naturally.
After Treatment
You may feel deeply relaxed, energized, emotional, or simply calm after a session. Some people experience a sense of completion or relief; others notice subtle shifts in how their body holds tension. The practitioner may suggest gentle self-care practices to support integration, such as time in nature, water, or rest. It's common to continue noticing changes over the hours or days following a session as your nervous system settles.
Follow-up Sessions
Many people benefit from ongoing sessions to deepen their capacity for self-regulation and continue processing stored stress. The frequency and duration depend on your needs and goals. Some practitioners recommend weekly or biweekly sessions initially, then spacing them as you develop greater body awareness and resilience. Your practitioner will work with you to determine what feels right and may teach you self-directed practices to use between sessions.
