Initial Consultation
Your first Reiki session typically begins with a brief consultation where the practitioner learns about your health history, current concerns, and wellness goals. This conversation helps the practitioner understand your needs and tailor the session accordingly. You will be informed about what to expect during the treatment and given an opportunity to ask questions. The practitioner may discuss the principles of Reiki and clarify that it is a complementary practice intended to support relaxation and well-being.
Treatment
During the treatment, you will lie fully clothed on a padded massage table in a quiet, calm room. The practitioner may dim the lights and play soft background music to create a relaxing atmosphere. You are invited to close your eyes and relax. The practitioner begins by placing their hands gently on or slightly above various areas of your body, typically starting at the head and moving down to the feet. Common hand positions include the head, eyes, throat, chest, stomach, lower abdomen, and feet, though the practitioner may adjust positions based on your needs.
Throughout the session, the practitioner maintains light hand contact or holds their hands a few inches above the body, allowing adequate space and respecting personal boundaries. Many people report feeling warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation during the treatment. The session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Some practitioners may incorporate other complementary techniques such as gentle massage or aromatherapy, depending on their training and your preferences.
After Treatment
Following the session, you are invited to rest briefly as your body integrates the experience. The practitioner may offer water and a few moments to return to full awareness. Many people feel deeply relaxed, calm, or energized after a session. Some report emotional releases or heightened awareness in the hours or days following treatment. The practitioner will discuss any observations and may offer recommendations for self-care, such as drinking water, resting, or journaling.
Follow-up Sessions
Many people choose to return for additional sessions to deepen the relaxation benefits or address ongoing wellness concerns. Some practitioners recommend weekly or monthly sessions as part of a wellness routine, while others work with clients on an as-needed basis. The frequency and duration of treatment are entirely individual and based on your preferences and goals. Regular sessions may provide cumulative benefits, though even a single session can offer immediate relaxation and stress relief.
