Preparing for Your Session
Arrive wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes — you'll remain fully dressed throughout your session. Natural fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal as they don't interfere with the practitioner's hand placement. Remove watches, heavy jewellery, and anything that might dig in whilst lying down.
Eat a light meal beforehand rather than arriving hungry or overly full. Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs for 24 hours prior, as these can interfere with your ability to sense subtle changes during the session. Some practitioners suggest drinking plenty of water before and after treatment.
Your practitioner will likely ask about your current health, any medications, and what you hope to gain from the session. Be honest about physical discomfort, stress levels, or emotional challenges — this helps them tailor the hand positions to your needs.
The Session Experience
You'll lie on a comfortable massage table, typically face up to start. The room is usually dimly lit with soft music playing. Many practitioners begin with a brief explanation of the process and ask about your comfort with different hand positions.
The treatment starts with the practitioner placing their hands on or just above your head and gradually working down your body. Each hand position is held for approximately three to five minutes. You'll feel the warmth of their hands, and some people notice tingling, coolness, or a subtle energy sensation, though others feel primarily the physical warmth.
Common hand positions include the crown and temples, throat area, heart and solar plexus, lower abdomen, and sometimes specific areas you've mentioned as problematic. If you're comfortable, the practitioner may ask you to turn over to work on your back and shoulders. The entire treatment typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
Most people find themselves deeply relaxed within the first few positions. You might drift into a meditative state or even light sleep — both are perfectly normal and don't interfere with the treatment.
What You Might Feel
Responses to Usui Reiki vary significantly between individuals and even between sessions. The most common experience is profound relaxation — a feeling of sinking into the table as tension melts away. Many people report a sense of floating or weightlessness.
Physical sensations can include warmth spreading through your body, gentle tingling, or areas feeling lighter or heavier than usual. Some people experience emotional responses: tears, laughter, or memories surfacing. These reactions are considered normal within the Reiki framework and often indicate energetic shifts.
Not everyone feels dramatic sensations, and this doesn't mean the treatment isn't working. Some people simply feel peaceful and refreshed, similar to after a good meditation or gentle massage. Your practitioner should reassure you that there's no "right" way to experience Reiki.
After the session, you might feel energised, sleepy, emotional, or simply more centred than when you arrived. These effects can continue evolving over the following 24-48 hours.
Aftercare and Integration
Drink plenty of water following your session, as many practitioners believe this supports the body's natural detoxification processes. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals for the rest of the day, opting instead for light, nourishing food.
Plan for a quiet evening if possible. Some people feel energised and want to be active, whilst others prefer rest. Trust your body's signals and don't push through fatigue if you're feeling sleepy.
You might notice shifts in sleep patterns, dreams, or emotional responses over the next few days. Some people report feeling more emotionally sensitive initially, whilst others feel more resilient to stress. Physical aches might temporarily increase before improving — practitioners often describe this as part of the energetic rebalancing process.
Keep notes about how you feel in the days following treatment. This information helps both you and your practitioner understand your response pattern and adjust future sessions accordingly.
Building a Treatment Programme
Most Usui Reiki practitioners suggest starting with three to four sessions scheduled weekly or fortnightly to establish how you respond to the treatment. This initial series allows you to notice patterns in your experience and determine whether Reiki feels beneficial for your particular needs.
If you find the sessions helpful, you might continue with monthly maintenance treatments or book sessions during particularly stressful periods. Some people prefer intensive short courses — perhaps weekly sessions for six weeks — whilst others find occasional treatments sufficient.
Unlike medical treatments, there's no standardised protocol for Reiki. The frequency depends entirely on your goals, response to treatment, and practical considerations like time and cost. Some people find benefit from a single session, whilst others develop long-term relationships with their practitioners.
Discuss your observations and goals with your practitioner after your initial sessions. They can help you determine whether continuing makes sense and what frequency might serve you best.
