Before You Arrive
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing in natural fibres if possible. You'll remain fully dressed throughout the session, so choose garments that feel good against your skin and allow easy movement. Remove heavy jewellery, particularly pieces with strong emotional significance, as practitioners often suggest this allows energy to flow more freely.
Eat lightly beforehand - avoid heavy meals within two hours of your appointment. Many practitioners recommend drinking plenty of water in the day leading up to your session. Some suggest avoiding alcohol for 24 hours prior, though practices vary between practitioners.
Bring an open mind and any specific intentions or areas of concern you'd like to explore. Write these down if it helps - you'll have time to discuss them at the start. There's no need to bring anything else, though some people like to have water and comfortable shoes for afterwards.
The Session Experience
Most sessions begin with 10-15 minutes of conversation. Your practitioner will ask about your current circumstances, what's brought you there, and any particular areas you'd like to focus on. This isn't therapy, but it helps them understand your energetic state and intentions.
You'll then lie down on a treatment table or sometimes sit in a chair, remaining fully clothed. The practitioner may place their hands gently on your body - typically starting at your head or heart - or work in your energy field with hands positioned a few inches above you. Some practitioners combine both approaches.
The middle portion lasts 45-60 minutes. Your practitioner works intuitively, often moving their hands to different areas as they sense where attention is needed. They may pause at certain spots, make gentle adjustments, or work in sweeping motions. Some practitioners share insights as they work; others maintain silence and discuss their perceptions afterwards.
The session concludes with a few minutes for you to reorient yourself, followed by the practitioner sharing their impressions and any guidance that came through during the work.
What You Might Experience
Physical sensations vary enormously between individuals and sessions. Some people feel warmth or tingling where the practitioner's hands are positioned. Others experience coolness, gentle pulsing, or a sense of energy moving through their body. Many report feeling deeply relaxed, similar to the sensation during meditation or just before sleep.
Emotional responses are equally varied. You might feel peaceful and centred, or emotions could surface that you weren't previously aware of. Some people experience what practitioners call 'energy shifts' - sudden feelings of lightness, release, or clarity. Others notice more subtle changes that become apparent over the following days.
After the session, many people feel simultaneously relaxed and energised. Some experience emotional sensitivity for 24-48 hours as the work integrates. Others feel an immediate sense of clarity or resolution around issues they brought to the session. It's equally normal to feel little immediate change - effects often unfold gradually.
Aftercare and Integration
Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours. Many practitioners believe this supports the body's natural processes following energetic work. Avoid alcohol for the rest of the day if possible, as some people find it interferes with the subtle effects of the session.
Plan for a gentle evening. Avoid intense physical exercise, challenging conversations, or overstimulating environments immediately afterwards. Many people benefit from quiet time to reflect on their experience - perhaps through journalling or gentle movement like walking.
Pay attention to your dreams, emotions, and energy levels over the following week. Some people notice shifts in sleep patterns, increased emotional clarity, or changes in how they respond to stress. Others find that insights or realisations emerge gradually in the days following treatment.
Contact your practitioner if you experience anything that concerns you, though adverse reactions are uncommon. Most effects, if any, are subtle and positive.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
Most practitioners recommend starting with 3-4 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart. This allows time for integration between sessions whilst maintaining energetic momentum. Some people feel significant shifts after a single session; others find benefits accumulate over several appointments.
After this initial period, many people transition to monthly sessions or work with their practitioner on an as-needed basis. Others prefer intensive short-term work around particular life transitions or challenges.
The frequency often depends on what you're seeking to address. Those using energy work for general wellbeing and stress management might have sessions monthly or seasonally. People working through specific emotional patterns or life changes often benefit from closer spacing initially, then extending the intervals as they integrate the work.
