Preparing for Your Session

Arrive wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes in natural fibres if possible. You'll remain fully clothed throughout, so choose layers you can easily adjust if you feel warm or cool during the session.

Eat lightly beforehand — a heavy meal might make you uncomfortable whilst lying down, but avoid arriving hungry as this can be distracting. Drink plenty of water in the hours before your appointment, as many people report feeling thirsty afterwards.

Set aside any expectations about dramatic healing or specific outcomes. Karuna Reiki works differently for everyone, and approaching with curiosity rather than fixed goals often proves more rewarding. If you're currently in therapy or taking medication for emotional health, continue these as normal — this work complements rather than replaces conventional support.

The Session Experience

Your practitioner will begin with a brief discussion about your current emotional landscape and what you hope to address. They might ask about recent losses, ongoing stress, or areas where you feel emotionally stuck. This isn't psychotherapy, but understanding your needs helps them select appropriate symbols and hand placements.

You'll lie on a massage table or comfortable mat, typically starting face-up. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or slightly above various parts of your body — commonly the head, heart, and abdomen. Unlike traditional Usui Reiki, Karuna practitioners work with additional symbols that they trace in the air or visualise whilst channeling energy.

Sessions usually last 60-75 minutes. You might notice warmth, tingling, or coolness under the practitioner's hands. Some people feel emotional waves — anything from deep peace to unexpected tears. Others experience vivid imagery or memories surfacing. Many simply feel deeply relaxed, as if drifting between sleep and wakefulness.

The practitioner may focus on specific areas for longer periods, particularly around the heart and solar plexus, where emotional patterns are traditionally understood to lodge. They work quietly, allowing whatever needs to emerge to do so naturally.

During and After: What You Might Experience

Physical sensations vary enormously. Some people report feeling energy moving through their body like gentle waves. Others notice areas of temperature change or a sense of something being 'released' from particular regions. A few feel very little physically but notice emotional shifts.

Emotional responses can be immediate or delayed. You might feel unexpectedly tearful, suddenly peaceful, or experience memories you hadn't thought about for years. Some people report vivid dreams for several nights following treatment. These responses are considered normal within the practice framework.

In the 24-48 hours after your session, you may notice increased emotional sensitivity or clarity about relationships and life patterns. Some people feel energised; others need extra rest. Occasionally, people experience what practitioners call a 'healing crisis' — a temporary intensification of symptoms before improvement. This might manifest as increased anxiety, vivid dreams, or emotional volatility lasting a day or two.

Aftercare and Integration

Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours to support whatever processing is happening in your system. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals immediately after treatment, as many people report feeling particularly sensitive during this period.

Give yourself permission to rest if you feel tired. Some people experience profound relaxation that continues for hours, whilst others feel more alert and clear than usual. Both responses are normal.

Keep a journal if you're so inclined. The days following Karuna Reiki often bring insights about emotional patterns or clarity about difficult relationships. Writing these down can help you integrate whatever shifts are occurring.

Avoid making major life decisions immediately after treatment. The emotional clarity that often follows can be valuable, but allow a few days for everything to settle before taking significant action based on insights received during or after the session.

Treatment Course and Timeline

Most practitioners recommend starting with three sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart. This allows time to process each treatment whilst maintaining momentum for deeper work. Some people notice shifts immediately; others find benefits accumulate gradually over several sessions.

If you're working with specific trauma or grief, expect the process to unfold over several months rather than weeks. Karuna Reiki is understood to work with core emotional patterns, which typically require time and patience to shift substantially.

After an initial series, many people return for single sessions during particularly challenging periods or as part of ongoing emotional maintenance. Others find monthly sessions helpful for continuing the deeper work that this modality can facilitate.

Discuss your progress openly with your practitioner. They can adjust their approach based on your responses and help you determine the most suitable frequency for your particular situation and goals.
