Before You Arrive

Eat a light meal 1-2 hours beforehand rather than arriving hungry or overly full. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for several hours prior, as these can affect your body's response to the warming treatment.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up to expose arms and legs. Cotton fabrics work best as synthetic materials can retain the distinctive herbal aroma. Remove any metal jewellery from areas likely to be treated, particularly watches or bracelets.

Bring a list of current medications and any recent changes to your health. Your practitioner will want to know about blood-thinning medications, recent injuries, or skin sensitivity. If you have respiratory conditions like asthma, mention this during your initial consultation as the herbal smoke may affect your breathing.

The Session Unfolds

Your practitioner begins with a consultation lasting 10-15 minutes, examining your tongue, feeling your pulse, and discussing your health concerns within the traditional Chinese medicine framework. They'll explain which acupuncture points they plan to treat and why.

The room fills with the earthy, slightly sweet aroma of burning mugwort as your practitioner lights the moxa stick — a tightly compressed roll of dried artemisia herb. This distinctive smell is completely normal and an integral part of the authentic experience.

You'll lie comfortably on a treatment table while your practitioner holds the glowing moxa stick 2-3 centimetres above selected acupuncture points. The warmth feels gentle and penetrating, never burning or uncomfortable. Most people describe it as deeply relaxing, like lying in warm sunshine. Each point receives 5-10 minutes of treatment, with your practitioner occasionally asking about the heat intensity.

Alternatively, your practitioner might use indirect moxibustion, placing small moxa cones on slices of ginger or other substances on your skin, or employ a moxa box — a wooden container that holds burning moxa while protecting your skin. The entire treatment typically lasts 30-60 minutes.

What You Might Experience

During treatment, expect a pleasant warming sensation that seems to penetrate deeper than surface heat. Many people report feeling relaxed and drowsy, similar to lying by a fireplace. Some experience a gentle tingling or subtle energy movement along what traditional Chinese medicine calls meridians.

The treated areas may develop mild redness that resembles a gentle sunburn. This is entirely normal and indicates good circulation response to the treatment. You might feel slightly lightheaded when first sitting up, so take your time rising from the treatment table.

After your session, you may notice increased energy or, conversely, feel ready for a restorative nap. Some people report improved digestion or sleep quality within 24-48 hours. Others notice gradual changes over several sessions rather than immediate effects.

Your clothes will carry the herbal aroma for several hours. While some find this pleasant and grounding, others prefer to change clothes if returning to work or social situations.

Aftercare and Recovery

Drink plenty of water following your session to support your body's response to treatment. Avoid cold drinks and foods for the remainder of the day, as traditional Chinese medicine theory suggests this can counteract the warming effects of moxibustion.

Keep treated areas covered and warm for several hours. The redness typically fades within 2-4 hours, though some people retain a pink glow for up to 24 hours. Apply a light moisturiser if the skin feels dry, but avoid harsh products or perfumed lotions.

Schedule rest time if possible, as many people feel deeply relaxed after treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day, though gentle walking is beneficial. Some practitioners recommend taking a warm bath with Epsom salts in the evening to enhance the relaxing effects.

Contact your practitioner if you experience unexpected reactions, persistent redness beyond 24 hours, or any concerning symptoms. While rare, some people are more sensitive to the treatment than others.

Treatment Course and Frequency

Most practitioners recommend an initial course of 6-8 sessions over 3-4 weeks to gauge your response to treatment. Acute conditions might require 2-3 sessions per week initially, while chronic concerns often benefit from weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance treatments.

Your practitioner will adjust the frequency based on your response and the condition being addressed. Some people notice improvements after 2-3 sessions, while others require the full initial course before experiencing significant changes.

For ongoing wellness support, many people continue with monthly or seasonal sessions. Traditional Chinese medicine views moxibustion as particularly beneficial during colder months or when your energy feels depleted.

Maintaining regular communication with your practitioner ensures the treatment remains appropriate for your evolving health needs. They can modify techniques, adjust point selection, and recommend the optimal spacing between sessions based on your individual response pattern.
