Initial Consultation
Your moxibustion session begins with a comprehensive consultation where the practitioner will ask about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and wellness goals. They will examine your tongue and take your pulse according to traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic methods. This assessment helps identify which acupuncture points and meridians require treatment. The practitioner will explain how moxibustion works and discuss what to expect, addressing any concerns or questions you may have. This conversation typically lasts 15-30 minutes.
Treatment
During the treatment phase, you will lie down in a comfortable, warm room. The practitioner may apply moxibustion in several ways depending on your condition and preference. The most common method involves holding a moxa stick (a compressed roll of dried mugwort) 1-2 inches above specific acupuncture points, warming the area without burning the skin. You will feel pleasant, penetrating warmth that gradually builds. Some practitioners use a "moxa box" to warm a larger area, while others may place a thin barrier between the herb and your skin. The treatment typically focuses on 3-8 acupuncture points and lasts 20-40 minutes total. Throughout the session, you should feel relaxed and warm; inform your practitioner immediately if you experience discomfort or burning sensations.
After Treatment
After moxibustion, you may feel deeply relaxed, warm, and grounded. Some people experience mild euphoria or emotional release. The practitioner will advise you to avoid cold water, cold air, and strenuous activity for several hours, as your body's pores are said to be open and vulnerable. Drink warm herbal tea or water to support the body's integration of the treatment. You might notice mild redness in the treated areas, which typically fades within hours. Many practitioners recommend rest and gentle movement for the remainder of the day.
Follow-up Sessions
Most conditions benefit from a series of treatments rather than a single session. Your practitioner will recommend a treatment plan, typically ranging from 6-12 sessions depending on the condition's severity and your body's response. Sessions are usually scheduled weekly or twice weekly initially, then spaced further apart as improvements occur. Between sessions, the practitioner may provide dietary advice, herbal recommendations, or lifestyle modifications to support your healing. You should notice gradual improvements in symptoms, energy levels, and overall wellbeing with consistent treatment.
