Initial Consultation
Your session typically begins with a consultation where the practitioner discusses your health history, current pain or tension patterns, injury background, and treatment goals. They will ask about your activity level, occupational demands, and any areas of particular concern. This information helps them tailor the pressure, techniques, and focus areas to your needs. You will also discuss comfort levels regarding pressure intensity and any sensitive areas to avoid.
Treatment
You will be positioned on a massage table, typically undressed to the extent you are comfortable (usually under a drape or sheet, with only the working area exposed). The practitioner uses their hands, forearms, elbows, and sometimes specialized tools to apply sustained, deliberate pressure to tight or restricted muscle tissue. The pace is slower than relaxation massage, allowing time for tissue response. You may experience varying sensations—pressure, mild discomfort, or release—as adhesions and tension begin to soften. The practitioner may ask for feedback on pressure level to ensure it remains therapeutic without crossing into pain. Sessions typically last 30–90 minutes depending on the scope of work.
After Treatment
After your session, you may feel immediate relief, increased range of motion, or temporary soreness (sometimes called "therapeutic soreness"). Some people experience mild stiffness or fatigue as their body processes the tissue work. You may be advised to drink water, apply heat or ice, and rest the treated areas. Most practitioners recommend avoiding strenuous activity for 24 hours to allow tissue healing. Minor bruising or tenderness can occur and usually resolves within a few days.
Follow-up Sessions
Results often improve with repeated sessions spaced days or weeks apart. Your practitioner may recommend an initial series (e.g., 4–6 sessions) to address chronic tension, then move to maintenance sessions as needed. Progress may plateau, and some conditions require ongoing care. You may be offered stretches, postural advice, or ergonomic modifications to support lasting improvement between sessions.
