Initial Consultation
Your first session typically begins with a meeting between you and the Ifá priest (Babalawo) or diviner. During this time, you may be asked about the reason for your consultation, specific questions or concerns you have, and what areas of your life you seek guidance on. The practitioner will explain the divination process and what to expect. Some practitioners may ask you to bring an offering or perform a preliminary ritual to set the spiritual context for the reading.
Treatment
The divination process itself varies in method but commonly involves the casting or manipulation of sacred objects—traditionally cowrie shells, palm nuts, or a divining chain (opele). The Babalawo interprets the patterns that emerge according to the Ifá corpus, a complex system of 256 principal sections (Odu), each containing multiple verses, proverbs, and spiritual wisdom. As patterns are cast and interpreted, the practitioner will speak directly with you about the meanings, often drawing on metaphor, spiritual teaching, and practical advice. The session may involve prayers, invocations, or ritual elements depending on the tradition and what emerges from the divination. Sessions typically last 30 minutes to over an hour and may involve recommendations for personal practices, offerings, or follow-up actions.
After Treatment
Following your session, you will receive guidance and recommendations. This may include spiritual practices to undertake, offerings to make (which can be symbolic or material), lifestyle changes to consider, or areas to focus your attention. Many practitioners provide written notes or symbols to help you remember key points. You may also receive recommendations for repeated divinations at significant life moments or on a regular schedule, depending on your situation and the practitioner's assessment.
Follow-up Sessions
Follow-up sessions allow you to report on developments, clarify previous guidance, and receive deeper insight into unfolding situations. Some practitioners recommend periodic readings to track spiritual progress or during major life transitions. The frequency depends on your needs and the practitioner's recommendations, ranging from occasional consultations during crises to regular monthly or seasonal readings.
