Preparing for Your Session
Arrive wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs. Many practitioners work through light clothing, though some prefer direct skin contact for certain points. Avoid heavy meals for two hours beforehand — a light snack is fine if you're prone to dizziness.
Bring any relevant health information, particularly about circulation issues, injuries, or medications. Your practitioner will need to know about blood pressure medications, anticoagulants, or recent surgeries. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment, as marma therapy can enhance circulation and metabolic processes.
Plan to arrive 10 minutes early for paperwork and a brief consultation. Your practitioner will discuss your constitution (dosha) in Ayurvedic terms and identify which marma points to focus on during your session.
The Treatment Process
Your session begins with a consultation lasting 10-15 minutes. The practitioner will assess your pulse, observe your tongue, and ask about your current physical and emotional state. This determines which of the 107 marma points to prioritise and which medicated oils to use.
You'll lie on a comfortable treatment table whilst the practitioner begins with gentle, warming strokes to prepare your tissues. The actual marma work involves precise finger pressure applied to specific points — often at joints where muscles, tendons, and blood vessels converge. Each point receives 30 seconds to 2 minutes of attention.
The pressure feels firm but should never be painful. Practitioners use circular motions, gentle vibration, or sustained pressure depending on the point's location and your constitution. You'll notice the work moving systematically — perhaps starting with points on your feet and hands, then progressing to arms, legs, and torso.
The practitioner applies warm, aromatic oils chosen for your specific needs. These might include sesame oil for grounding, coconut oil for cooling, or specialised herbal preparations. The entire hands-on portion typically lasts 45-60 minutes.
Sensations During and After Treatment
Most people experience deep relaxation within the first 15 minutes. You might feel warmth spreading from each point as it's stimulated, or a subtle tingling sensation that seems to travel along pathways in your body. Some points feel particularly sensitive or tender — this is normal and often indicates areas where energy has been stagnant.
Emotional releases occasionally occur during treatment. You might feel unexpectedly emotional or experience memories surfacing. This is considered a natural part of the process as blocked energy begins moving. Many people describe feeling both relaxed and energised simultaneously.
Immediately after your session, expect to feel deeply calm and slightly drowsy. Some experience mild detox symptoms over the next 24 hours — perhaps slight fatigue, increased urination, or vivid dreams. These typically resolve quickly and indicate your system is responding to the treatment.
The effects often continue developing for 2-3 days after your session. Many report improved sleep quality, better digestion, or a sense of emotional clarity emerging gradually.
Post-Session Care
Rest for at least 30 minutes after treatment if possible. Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day to support your system's natural detox processes. Avoid cold drinks, which can counteract the warming oils and energy movement.
Keep the oils on your skin for several hours — they continue working after the session ends. When you do shower, use warm water and gentle soap, leaving a light film of oil to nourish your skin overnight.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, though gentle walking is beneficial. Heavy meals, alcohol, and caffeine can interfere with the subtle energetic shifts occurring in your system. Many people find they sleep particularly deeply on the night following treatment.
Schedule your next session when any initial reactions have settled — typically 5-7 days later for your first few treatments, then possibly extending to 2-3 weeks as your system adapts.
Treatment Frequency and Course Length
A typical initial course involves 6-8 weekly sessions, allowing time for your system to integrate each treatment. Your practitioner may recommend more frequent sessions initially if you're dealing with significant stress or energy imbalances, then spacing them out as improvements stabilise.
Maintenance treatments often occur monthly or seasonally, timed with Ayurvedic principles around seasonal transitions when your constitution naturally shifts. Some people find quarterly sessions sufficient to maintain the benefits.
Your response pattern will become clearer after 3-4 sessions. Some people notice subtle shifts immediately, whilst others require several treatments before experiencing significant changes. The cumulative effect tends to be more profound than individual sessions, as your energy pathways gradually open and rebalance.
Discuss your goals with your practitioner after the initial course. Whether you're seeking stress management, energetic balance, or simply enjoying the deep relaxation, they can recommend an appropriate ongoing schedule based on your individual response and constitution.
