Preparing for Your Appointment
Your skin needs time to settle before professional treatment. Avoid active skincare ingredients—retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or benzoyl peroxide—for 48 hours beforehand. Skip waxing, dermaplaning, or aggressive exfoliation for at least a week.
Arrive with clean skin, but don't feel compelled to do anything special that morning. Your therapist will cleanse your skin as part of the treatment. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your face and neck. Avoid tight collars or fabrics that might irritate freshly treated skin.
Bring a list of current skincare products, medications, and any known allergies. If you're menstruating, pregnant, or have recently had cosmetic injections, mention this during booking. Some treatments may need adjusting or postponing.
The Treatment Process
Your session begins with a detailed skin consultation lasting 10-15 minutes. The therapist examines your skin under good lighting, often using a magnifying lamp to assess texture, tone, and specific concerns. They'll discuss your skincare routine, lifestyle factors, and treatment goals before recommending an approach.
The treatment phase typically spans 45-60 minutes. You'll lie on a treatment bed whilst your therapist cleanses your skin with professional-grade products. This feels similar to washing your face but more thorough, often involving multiple cleansing stages.
Depending on your treatment type, you might experience gentle exfoliation through enzyme masks that tingle slightly, or manual extraction of blackheads with mild pressure. Chemical peels create a warming or tingling sensation that intensifies gradually. Hydrating treatments feel cooling and soothing, whilst LED light therapy involves lying under coloured lights with protective eye covers.
The session concludes with moisturiser and sunscreen application. Your therapist will explain what you've just experienced and provide specific aftercare instructions.
During and After Your Session
Most people find professional skin treatments relaxing, though sensations vary considerably. Gentle facials feel like an extended, luxurious skincare routine. More intensive treatments might involve temporary stinging, warmth, or tightness that subsides quickly.
Immediately post-treatment, your skin may appear slightly flushed—this is normal and typically resolves within 2-6 hours. Some people experience mild sensitivity or tightness for 24-48 hours. Your skin might feel softer and look brighter immediately, though optimal results develop over several days.
Don't be surprised if you initially look slightly worse before improvement becomes apparent. This is particularly common with treatments targeting congestion or uneven texture. Active breakouts might temporarily worsen as impurities surface, whilst chemical peels can cause light flaking for 3-5 days.
Essential Aftercare
Your skin is more vulnerable for 24-48 hours post-treatment. Avoid direct sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ religiously. Skip intense exercise, saunas, or hot showers for 24 hours to prevent irritation.
Simplify your skincare routine temporarily. Use only gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers. Avoid active ingredients like retinoids or acids until your therapist gives the all-clear, usually after 3-7 days.
Don't pick at any flaking or peeling—this is part of the renewal process. Instead, apply a rich moisturiser to soften and support the skin's natural shedding. If you experience excessive redness, swelling, or discomfort beyond what your therapist described, contact them immediately.
Results typically become apparent within 3-7 days as your skin completes its natural renewal cycle. You'll notice improved texture, clearer tone, or enhanced radiance depending on your specific treatment.
Building Your Treatment Programme
Single sessions provide temporary improvement, but sustainable results require consistency. Most skin concerns benefit from an initial series of 4-6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart, followed by monthly maintenance sessions.
Your therapist will create a personalised timeline based on your skin's response and goals. Acne-focused treatments might require more frequent sessions initially, whilst anti-ageing programmes often space treatments further apart to allow collagen remodelling.
Budget for both the treatment series and recommended home care products. Professional treatments work synergistically with appropriate daily skincare—your therapist will likely suggest specific products to maximise and maintain your results between appointments.
