Initial Consultation
Your first session typically involves a comprehensive intake assessment. The practitioner will review your medical history, current symptoms, lifestyle factors, and specific goals for treatment. They will explain how EEG Biofeedback works, what to expect during training, and discuss realistic timelines for improvement. Some practitioners may conduct a quantitative EEG (qEEG) assessment—a detailed brainwave map—to identify specific patterns that may be targeted during training.
Treatment
During a neurofeedback session, electrodes are placed on your scalp (usually at specific sites like Cz, Pz, or other standardized positions) to detect electrical activity from your brain. You sit comfortably while viewing a computer screen or listening to audio feedback that responds to your brainwave patterns in real time. For example, a screen might show a video game or movie that plays smoothly when your brain produces desired brainwave frequencies and pauses or distorts when it produces undesired patterns. Your brain learns through this feedback loop to naturally shift toward the target state. Sessions typically last 30–60 minutes, though the actual training period is often 20–40 minutes.
After Treatment
Many people feel relaxed or slightly fatigued after a session, similar to the feeling after mental exertion. Some report subtle shifts in mood or focus immediately, though most benefits develop gradually over multiple sessions. You may be given general wellness recommendations to support brain health, such as sleep hygiene, stress management, or nutrition guidance. The practitioner will discuss any observations from the session and adjust protocols as needed.
Follow-up Sessions
Typical treatment involves 20–40 sessions scheduled weekly or twice weekly, though this varies based on your condition and response. Progress is typically monitored through symptom tracking, repeat qEEG assessments, and client-reported outcomes. As your brain learns the desired patterns, sessions may be spaced further apart. Some people continue maintenance sessions periodically, while others discontinue treatment once goals are met. The practitioner should provide clear communication about expected duration and milestones.
