Initial Consultation
Your first session typically involves a conversation about your movement history, areas of discomfort or limitation, and what you hope to explore. The practitioner may observe your natural posture and movement patterns without judgment, noting areas of tension, asymmetry, or restrictions. This is not a diagnosis but rather an assessment to understand your movement baseline and inform the direction of your work together.
Treatment
Feldenkrais sessions follow one of two formats. In Awareness Through Movement (ATM) group classes, you will lie, sit, or stand comfortably while the instructor guides you through slow, exploratory movement sequences using clear, gentle verbal cues. You are encouraged to move only as far as feels comfortable and to pay attention to sensation without striving or pushing. The sequences are typically organized around everyday movements (like reaching, turning, or bending) but approached in novel ways to increase awareness and ease.
In Functional Integration (FI), one-on-one sessions, the practitioner uses their hands to gently guide and support your movement while you remain relaxed. The touch is exploratory rather than corrective, inviting your nervous system to discover more efficient patterns. Sessions are quiet and meditative, allowing you to feel the difference between habitual and alternative ways of moving.
After Treatment
Many people feel a sense of lightness, ease, or expanded awareness immediately after a session. Some notice improved posture, reduced tension, or a sense of calm. It is common to feel more aware of your body and movement patterns in daily life. Some people experience a brief period of mild fatigue as the body integrates new learning, which typically resolves quickly.
Follow-up Sessions
Change unfolds gradually through repeated exploration. Most people benefit from consistent practice, whether attending weekly group classes or scheduling periodic individual sessions. Many practitioners recommend an initial series of sessions to establish a foundation, then ongoing lessons as desired. Between sessions, you may be encouraged to practice simple awareness exercises at home to deepen learning.
