Initial Consultation
Your practitioner will begin by discussing your health history, current symptoms, areas of tension, and any injuries or sensitivities. They will ask about your comfort with heat and whether you have any contraindications such as recent sunburn, open wounds, or heat sensitivity. This is also when you can communicate your preferences regarding pressure, temperature, and focus areas. The practitioner should explain the process, answer questions, and ensure you understand what to expect.
Treatment
You will be positioned on a massage table, typically face-down initially, with appropriate draping for comfort and modesty. The practitioner will begin by applying massage oil to your skin. Smooth, heated basalt stones (typically ranging from 120–150°F / 49–65°C) are then placed on key areas of your body—commonly the back, shoulders, spine, and between the shoulder blades. While the stones warm the tissues, the practitioner performs traditional massage techniques using their hands, occasionally incorporating additional heated stones as tools for massage strokes. The warmth penetrates deeper into muscles, potentially enhancing relaxation and increasing flexibility. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes, and the combination of heat and touch creates a deeply soothing experience. You may be asked to turn over so the front of your body can also be treated.
After Treatment
As the session concludes, heated stones are removed and your body is gradually allowed to cool. The practitioner may cover you with blankets to maintain warmth and allow a gentle transition. You may feel deeply relaxed and should be given time to rest before slowly getting up. Drink water to stay hydrated, as the heat can increase fluid loss. Some people experience mild drowsiness or a sense of deep calm that may persist for hours. You should avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and intense temperature changes immediately after treatment.
Follow-up Sessions
Many practitioners recommend follow-up appointments to build on benefits, though frequency depends on your goals and response. Some people benefit from weekly sessions during periods of high stress, while others prefer monthly maintenance treatments. Your practitioner may suggest adjustments based on your progress and should provide guidance on self-care practices and stretching between sessions.
