Initial Consultation
Your session typically begins with a consultation where your practitioner will discuss your health history, current concerns, areas of tension or discomfort, and wellness goals. They will ask about any injuries, medical conditions, or areas you'd prefer to avoid. This is also an opportunity to discuss your expectations and what you hope to gain from the session. A reputable practitioner will explain what to expect during the treatment and answer any questions.
Treatment
You will be asked to lie on a massage table, typically undressed or in underwear beneath a sheet or blanket for warmth and modesty. The practitioner will undrape only the area being worked on. The session generally begins with the practitioner centering themselves and setting an intention, which aligns with the spiritual roots of the practice. They will then apply warm massage oil and begin using long, flowing strokes across your body, often using forearms, hands, and sometimes elbows. The strokes are typically rhythmic and continuous, moving along the length of muscles and energy pathways. The pressure is usually moderate and can be adjusted based on your comfort. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes. Many practitioners incorporate elements of prayer, intention-setting, or energy work alongside the physical massage.
After Treatment
After the session, you may feel deeply relaxed, sometimes even drowsy. You might experience a sense of calm or emotional release. The practitioner may recommend that you rest quietly for a few moments before getting up slowly. You should drink plenty of water to support the body's natural detoxification processes. Some people experience mild soreness the following day (similar to other massage modalities), while others feel energized and restored.
Follow-up Sessions
Many practitioners recommend periodic sessions to maintain benefits—this might range from monthly to quarterly depending on your goals and preference. Some people use Lomi Lomi as an occasional wellness treat, while others integrate it into regular self-care routines.
