Initial Consultation
Your first session typically begins with a detailed consultation where the practitioner assesses your health history, current symptoms, and specific concerns. They will ask about any swelling, recent surgery, infections, or skin conditions, and will explain how the lymphatic system works and what to expect during treatment. This is an ideal time to discuss your goals and any medical conditions, medications, or previous treatments that might be relevant. The practitioner may perform a simple assessment, such as checking for areas of swelling or palpating lymph nodes, to determine your baseline status.
Treatment
Lymphatic Massage sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes and involve slow, gentle, rhythmic movements applied to the skin. Unlike traditional massage, which uses deeper pressure, lymphatic drainage employs very light pressure—often described as the weight of a fingertip—to stimulate lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. The practitioner works in a specific sequence, usually beginning at the neck (where major lymph nodes are located) and moving progressively over the body to encourage fluid movement toward lymph nodes and the heart. Treatment is performed with the client fully clothed or in light clothing, and the room is typically calm and quiet to promote relaxation. You may feel a subtle sensation of gentle pressure and gentle movement across your skin, which should feel soothing rather than uncomfortable.
After Treatment
Following a session, many clients feel deeply relaxed and may notice a sense of lightness or reduced puffiness within hours or over the next few days. It is common to experience a slight increase in urination as the body processes mobilized fluid. You may be encouraged to drink extra water to support the body's natural detoxification processes. The practitioner may suggest light activity and avoiding strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day. Some clients report improved sleep quality and a general sense of well-being following treatment.
Follow-up Sessions
The number and frequency of sessions depend on your individual needs and the condition being addressed. For general wellness, monthly or quarterly sessions may be sufficient. For post-surgical swelling or lymphedema management, more frequent sessions (1-3 times per week) may be recommended initially, potentially tapering over time. Your practitioner will discuss a treatment plan and may teach you self-massage techniques to perform between professional sessions. Progress is often assessed through measurements, visual changes in swelling, or how you feel overall.
