Initial Consultation
Your first TFT session typically begins with a detailed conversation about your current emotional concern, whether anxiety, a specific phobia, past trauma, or another issue. The practitioner will ask you to identify and focus on the problem, rate your emotional distress on a scale (often 0–10), and may discuss your medical history and any current mental health treatment. The practitioner will explain how TFT works and what to expect during tapping, and will confirm you are comfortable proceeding.
Treatment
Once your issue is identified, the practitioner will guide you through a specific tapping sequence. You will tap with your fingertips on designated acupressure meridian points—commonly on the face, hands, collarbone, or underarm—while mentally focusing on or repeating affirmations related to your problem. The tapping is gentle and painless. Sessions typically last 30–60 minutes, and the tapping sequence may be repeated several times. Throughout, you remain fully aware and in control; the practitioner is guiding rather than performing the treatment on you.
After Treatment
After completing the tapping sequence, you will be asked to re-rate your emotional distress. Many practitioners ask you to engage in physical movement (such as eye movements or walking) or mental exercises to "integrate" the work. You may feel more relaxed, lighter, or experience a shift in how you perceive the issue. Some people notice changes immediately, while others report benefits developing over hours or days. The practitioner will discuss any observations and may provide guidance on self-care.
Follow-up Sessions
Depending on your needs, practitioners typically recommend 2–6 sessions for a specific issue, though this varies. Some clients benefit from ongoing sessions for deeper issues or multiple concerns. Between sessions, you may be taught self-tapping techniques to use at home to reinforce gains or address new emotional triggers. Regular follow-up sessions allow the practitioner to monitor progress and adjust the approach as needed.
