Initial Consultation
Your first meeting with a TM instructor typically involves a brief discussion about your goals, current stress levels, lifestyle, and any health concerns. The instructor will explain how TM works, what to expect, and answer preliminary questions. This consultation helps the instructor understand your readiness and suitability for the practice. No meditation occurs during this phase; it is purely informational and takes 15-30 minutes.
Treatment
During your first formal instruction session, the certified TM instructor will teach you a personalized mantra—a specific word or sound chosen based on your individual characteristics. You will then practice silently repeating this mantra while sitting comfortably with eyes closed. The mantra serves as a mental anchor to gently settle your mind into a quieter state of awareness. The instructor will guide you through the process, demonstrating the technique and correcting your approach as needed. The initial instruction typically lasts 1-2 hours and includes practical guidance on posture, breathing rhythm, and how to handle distracting thoughts without effort or force.
Following the first session, you will attend 3-4 additional verification sessions over consecutive days (each 1-2 hours) where the instructor observes your practice, answers questions, and refines your technique. These sessions ensure you have absorbed the fundamentals correctly. During personal practice, you will typically meditate for 15-20 minutes, twice daily (morning and evening), sitting quietly in a comfortable position with your eyes gently closed.
After Treatment
After completing initial instruction, most practitioners continue daily home practice without ongoing session costs. Many report feeling a sense of relaxation, mental clarity, and reduced tension immediately following meditation. Some experience a brief period of deepened relaxation (lasting minutes to hours) after practice. You may notice gradual improvements in sleep quality, emotional resilience, and overall well-being over weeks and months of consistent practice. Some practitioners report temporary emotional release during meditation as stress and tension surface and dissipate.
Follow-up Sessions
While TM emphasizes self-directed daily practice, many instructors offer periodic group meditations (often free or low-cost), refresher sessions, and advanced technique instruction (TM-Sidhi program) for practitioners interested in deeper exploration. Some practitioners attend annual or semi-annual check-in sessions with their instructor to address concerns, deepen understanding, or explore advanced practices. The frequency of follow-up engagement varies widely based on individual preference and organizational involvement.
