What Is Acupressure?

Acupressure is a bodywork practice from traditional Chinese medicine that applies firm pressure — with fingers, thumbs, or knuckles — to specific points on the body. These points correspond to the same map used in acupuncture. Unlike acupuncture, it requires no needles, no clinical setting, and can be self-applied once relevant points have been learned.

How It May Reduce Stress

Proposed mechanisms include stimulation of the autonomic nervous system (promoting parasympathetic activation), release of endorphins, and direct effects on muscle tension. The focused attention required to locate and hold acupressure points may also have a mindfulness-adjacent benefit.

What the Research Shows

A 2019 systematic review of acupressure for anxiety found 17 eligible trials covering pre-operative patients, haemodialysis patients, and students with exam anxiety. Most trials reported significant reductions in anxiety scores, though evidence quality was rated as low to moderate.

The most studied point is PC6 (Pericardium 6), located on the inner wrist. It has reasonable evidence for nausea and motion sickness, and emerging evidence for anxiety. HT7 at the wrist crease is also commonly used in anxiety protocols.

Self-Acupressure for Daily Stress

One of acupressure's main advantages is that it can become a daily self-care practice. A simple protocol: 2–3 minutes on PC6, then HT7 on both wrists, and LI4 in the webbing between thumb and forefinger. Morning and evening application, or use during acute stress, is commonly recommended.

Evidence Limitations

The acupressure evidence base shares many challenges with acupuncture research: difficult-to-design sham controls, imperfect blinding, small samples, and heterogeneous protocols. Acupressure has a very low risk profile, which lowers the threshold for individual experimentation even where evidence is limited.

Finding a Practitioner

Acupressure is practised by acupuncturists, shiatsu practitioners, and some massage therapists. An initial session with a qualified practitioner will help you identify relevant points for your presentation and learn correct technique for home use.
