Initial Consultation
Your first session begins with a comprehensive consultation to determine your unique constitution (prakriti) and current state of imbalance (vikriti). The practitioner will ask detailed questions about your health history, lifestyle, diet, sleep patterns, and stress levels. They may also examine your pulse, tongue, and skin to assess your dosha balance. Based on this assessment, they'll select appropriate oils and techniques tailored to your specific needs.
Treatment
The massage typically takes place on a comfortable table in a warm, peaceful environment. You'll be asked to undress to your comfort level, with appropriate draping maintained throughout. The practitioner uses warm, herb-infused oils chosen specifically for your constitution and current needs. The massage involves long, flowing strokes combined with specific techniques designed to stimulate marma points (vital energy points similar to acupressure points). Different body areas may receive varying pressure and attention based on your dosha type and health concerns. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes and may include techniques like synchronized four-handed massage (abhyanga), oil pouring (dhara), or specialized treatments for specific conditions.
After Treatment
Following the massage, you'll have time to rest and allow the oils to continue absorbing into your skin. The practitioner may recommend keeping the oils on for 20-30 minutes before showering with warm water and mild soap. You'll receive personalized recommendations for diet, lifestyle modifications, and self-care practices to support your healing process. It's common to feel deeply relaxed and somewhat sleepy after treatment.
Follow-up Sessions
Subsequent sessions build upon previous treatments, with the practitioner adjusting techniques and oils based on your response and changing needs. Regular sessions are often recommended for chronic conditions or ongoing wellness maintenance, typically scheduled weekly or bi-weekly initially, then less frequently as balance is restored.
