What are the most common migraine triggers?

Common triggers include hormonal fluctuations (particularly oestrogen changes around menstruation), sleep disruption (both too little and too much), dehydration, skipped meals, alcohol (particularly wine and beer), caffeine fluctuations, stress and emotional intensity, strong sensory stimuli (light, smell, sound), and weather changes. Should I take painkillers every time I get a migraine?

Acute medication is appropriate for managing individual migraine attacks, but using simple analgesics or triptans more than 10–15 days per month risks developing medication overuse headache (MOH), which increases headache frequency. If you are taking acute medication very frequently, discuss preventive treatment options with a doctor or headache specialist.
