Initial Consultation
Potential participants undergo a thorough screening process that includes medical history, current medications, mental health status, and intentions for the ceremony. Many facilitators require participants to follow dietary restrictions (dieta) for days or weeks beforehand, avoiding certain foods, alcohol, and medications. This preparation period is considered essential for both safety and the effectiveness of the experience.
Treatment
Ceremonies typically begin in the evening and last 6-8 hours. Participants gather in a safe, comfortable setting, often a circular arrangement with the facilitator or shaman at the center. The ayahuasca brew is consumed in small cups, with effects typically beginning within 30-60 minutes. Experiences may include intense visions, emotional releases, physical sensations, and profound insights. Facilitators provide guidance, protection, and support throughout the journey, often using traditional songs (icaros), sage, or other ceremonial elements. Participants may experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, which is considered part of the purging and healing process.
After Treatment
Following the peak effects, participants typically rest and integrate their experiences. Many facilitators encourage journaling and provide a supportive environment for sharing insights. The integration period immediately following the ceremony is considered crucial for processing the experience and implementing any insights gained.
Follow-up Sessions
Some individuals participate in multiple ceremonies over time, though this varies greatly based on personal goals and the facilitator's recommendations. Many practitioners emphasize the importance of integration work between ceremonies, which may include therapy, meditation, lifestyle changes, or other practices to incorporate insights from the ayahuasca experience into daily life.
